Enjoying the Experience and Traveling
Have fun! Living in a new country brings with it the opportunity to explore. Enjoy all the wonderful aspects of your surroundings. Be a tourist, whether you do so within the greater confines of your city, country, or beyond.
Living in another part of the world provides limitless possibilities for exploration and adventure. There is so much to see, so little time. Take advantage of it while you’re there; you might not get the opportunity again. Don’t work so hard that you leave your posting without having seen the country. Think of it as treating yourself, as well as expanding your mind.
I often went to the ballet and the opera and will never forget the time I saw The Nutcracker at Christmas time at a theater inside the Kremlin walls. The last scene was designed to look as if the dancers were walking through the Kremlin gates as soft snow fell down on them. When we exited the theater, we crossed the same bridge during a light snowfall. It was magical. —Patricia, New York Times
An overseas assignment usually involves a lot of travel, whether within your base country itself or in the encompassing region. Whenever you travel, try to take an extra day to explore the local life, restaurants, and shopping. These little excursions aren’t all a boondoggle. They actually help bring you a step closer to understanding the cultures and people you are doing business with. —Barbara, strategy and innovation consultant
